2020-21 Premier League was most peculiar league season, says Peter Drury
A season full of twist and turns, alteration of plots and sub-plots, the 2020-21 Premier League (PL) was characterized by fixture congestions, postponement and restrictions due to the escalation in positive COVID-19 cases.
This caused disruption to Association Football, plunging some PL clubs into financial woes in Europe and across the world.
Renowned commentator Peter Drury believes that the 2020-21 Premier League (PL) was an unusual season.
Speaking to Michael Asare Boadu on SilverSports midday SportsCenter , Drury shared some insights on the 2020-21 Premier League season on some strange factors that affected the season as football commentator.
”It was the most peculiar Premier League season really as rightly said because through the early weeks and months of it we thought we were going to get one of those blanket finishes with seven or eight teams involved right through”
”There were moments in the early weeks where it could have been Liverpool, Everton had a turn, even Southamptom were at the top, obviously Manchester United had their moments, Chelsea starts it well, Tottenham already mentioned and Manchester City had a sound start and that of course played into the whole complication of COVID….and shots in summer, fixture congestions and tired players”
”There were so many strange factors, unusual factors in the season just gone but it did take a long time and when eventually it did settle down the cranes rose to the top and the cranes certainly this year was Manchester City….they are really a phenomenal football team… they played really beautiful football”
English football has had to adjust to the presence of coronavirus with tougher restrictions including empty stadiums.
Supporters have been largely unable to attend matches due to strict social distancing protocols, while players have been required to undergo weekly medical checks.
Drury indicated that the absence of supporters also had an impact on this season’s Premier League.
”It has been a bizarre season and I don’t mean any disrespect to Manchester City when I say I hope we have no other season like it ever again because the absence of supporters absolutely made it an echoing absence season – strange, weird and wanting”
The 2020–21 Premier League was the 29th season of the Premier League, the top English professional league for Association Football clubs since its establishment in 1992. The season was initially scheduled to start on 8 August, but this was delayed until 12 September as a consequence of the postponement of the previous season’s conclusion due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Manchester City secured a fifth Premier League title and seventh English league title overall with three matches to spare; it was also the club’s third title in the last four seasons,
