6 dead, others feared missing after heavy downpour in Kumasi
Parts of Kumasi were flooded on Monday after torrential rains heavily hit the Ashanti Regional capital destroying some properties.
Santasi Anyinam , Ahenema Kokoben in Kumasi were among some of the areas which were heavily affected by the torrential downpour.
Some six persons including minors and pregnant woman were reported to have lost their lives with some still missing and feared dead after they were swept away by the heavy floods.
An eyewitness Emmanuel Kaba from Santasi Anyinam Zongo reported the sad incident in an interview to SilverFM :
”Some of the victims were persons who were at the bucket of a KIA truck en route to their homes.. Their truck was being dragged gradually by the heavy floods ”
”This made some occupants of the KIA truck about seven of them jump to safety but they were accidentally washed away with the floods”
”We have now being discovering dead bodies about four in the area since Tuesday and this morning”
Another eyewitness also reported;
”Around 2am commuters were still struggling to cross to the other side of the road due to the flooding from a weak bridge constructed”
”The Anyinam to Kokoben to Obuasi road was also heavily flooded”
”A Pregnant woman with her child and some three boys were also washed away into the Akotosu river and the NADMO officials had to make some pacifications before they took the bodies to the morgue”
Nana Atakora Koduah, Ashanti Regional NADMO Administrator also gave details;
”Some 5 persons including 2 minors and 3 Adults are confirmed dead: we found the dead bodies of a 9year old boy from Kromoasi Afaseabom in the Atwima Kwanwoma District and 9year old young girl at Daban Panin”
”The were other three male adults who were washed away by the floods after they had joined a KIA truck to cross to safety at Anyinam , Ahenema Kokoben at an area where a bridge divide two the two towns: the weak bridge was totally flooded and all vehicles had packed awaiting the floods to reduce but the KIA truck decided to move to the other side resulting in this catastrophe”
