AFCON 2021 : Cape Verde in comeback draw vs hosts Cameroon,Burkina Faso into last 16 despite draw with Ethiopia
The final round of Group games in the 2021 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations ( AFCON) came off yesterday with hosts Cameroon being held to a 1-1 stalemate by the Blue Sharks.
Cape Verde rallied back to score a second half equaliser to rescue a point against hosts Cameroon to qualify to the next stage of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon 2021.
Vincent Aboubakar gave the Indomitable Lions the lead six minutes before the break at the electric Olembe Stadiu but a well-worked equaliser in the 53rd minute by halftime substitute Garry Rodrigues equalised saw the Sharks on the right path for a last 16 place.
In other game played the same time in Bafoussam, Ethiopia were shown the exit door after a 1-1 draw against Burkina Faso.
The Stallions took a first-half lead with Cyrille Bayala breaking the deadlock in the 24th minute, but Ethiopia cancelled it out from the penalty spot, thanks to Getaneh Kebede’s strike in the 52nd minute.
The Stallions were looking for a win that would see them qualify automatically having collected 3 points in the recent victory over Cape Verde.
Cameroon topped Group A with 7 points , Burkina Faso in second place with 4 points followed by Cape Verde on the same point as the Stallions and Ethiopia placed bottom.
