AFCON2021: Comoros hand Black Stars shock exit, Morocco top group despite Gabon draw

Debutants Comoros defeated the Black Stars of Ghana at the Roumdé Adjia Stadium on Tuesday evening in the final Group C match, rekindling their hopes.

Ghana are officially out of the 33rd edition of AFCON, Cameroon 2021 after succumbing to a 3-2 defeat against Comoros.

The Black Stars secured just a point in Group C after a disappointing start to their AFCON campaign.

The Black Stars staged a twice comeback to draw 2-2 parity to avoid an early exit but the Comoros test proved to be a difficult hurdle for them.

In the three-matches played, Ghana surprisingly failed to win a single match, suffering defeats against Morocco (1-0) and Comoros (3-2) sandwich between Gabon (1-1) draw.

This is the second time the four-time AFCON champion has been eliminated early from the continent’s biggest football showpiece in the last two decades.

The last time was in 2006 was Zimbabwe handed them the shock exit.

The Comoros have now three points (3), moving from fourth position to third, just behind Gabon, second with five points and will have to wait for the results of the other groups to advance as of the best third.

Morocco seal top spot

In other Group C encounter, the Atlas Lions of Morocco also came from behind on two occasions to draw Gabon 2-2 and finish top of Group C at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon 2021.

Allevinah and Boupendza twice gave the Panthers the lead before Boufal and Hakimi helped Morocco snatch a point and top spot.

Morocco finish the group with 7 points two more than Gabon in second with while debutants Comoros move to third with 3 points and Ghana bottom with a point.

Senegal squeeze through to knockout phase

The Teranga Lions of Senegal made it to the Round of 16 of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations after settling for a goalless draw against the Flames of Malawi in their last Group B match played at the Stade Omnisports de Bafoussam on Tuesday.

Africa’s number one ranked team have not yet come to the party in the tournament and we’re looking to stamp their authority.

Malawi were looking to cause an upset knowing that a win would guarantee a spot in the knock out stage of the competition.

Senegal have 5 points , Guinea on the same 4points with Malawi who awaits for the results of the other groups to advance as of the best third.

Zimbabwe exits the tournament despite picking a -1 win against Guinea.
