Black Stars suffer 4-1 defeat to Japan in Kirin Cup opener
The Black Stars of Ghana were humiliated to a 4-1 heavy defeat to Japan in the 2022 Kirin Cup on Friday at the Misaki Park Stadium.
The four nation tournament saw hosts Japan, beat the West African country 4-1 to book a place in the final.
The 2022 Kirin Challenge Cup is scheduled to be the 21st edition of the international friendly football tournament Kirin Cup, played in Japan between 10 and 14 June 2022, with the participation of four teams: Japan, Chile, Ghana and Tunisia.
The Japanese victory therefore ends Otto Addo’s side four-game unbeaten streak after qualifying Ghana to the World Cup and also having a good start in the AFCON qualifiers.
Miki Yamane finished off a beautiful team move to hand the hosts lead in the 29th minute .
Jordan Ayew restored the Black Stars to parity few minutes before the break, with a strike from outside the box in the 44th minute.
However, the Black Stars celebration was short-lived as Kaoru Mitoma’s curler from distance in the 45th minute went past Lawrence Ati-Zigi as the first half ended 2-1 in favour of Japan.
Takefusa Kubo and Daizen Maeda got on the scoresheets in the 73rd and 82nd minute respectively to put the game beyond Ghana’s reach at the Misaki Park Stadium.
Japan will take on the winner of the match between Tunisia and Chile for the finals while the two losing teams slug it out for the third place.
