Argentina survive Dutch scare, advance to semifinals after shootout
Argentina made it to the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup defeating the Netherlands 4-3 on penalty shoot out, surviving a two goal Dutch comeback.
Argentina held on a 2-0 advantage into the 82nd minute but a late brace from Wout Weghorst drove the game into extra time as Lionel Scaloni’s defense collapsed. Scoring his first goal only five minutes after entering the match, Weghorst was the ultimate super sub for Louis van Gaal.
Emi Martinez was a hero for the night making two saves during an epic penalty shootout and Lautaro Martinez hit the critical kick to send Argentina to the next round.
Argentina will play Croatia in the last-four round. The Croats stunned Brazil earlier with a similar comeback victory after that extended the game into spot kicks.
